Melanie Sue Bowles’s first novel, The Horses of Proud Spirit, is actually a series of short
stories that all center on one woman’s transformation from a woman who just wanted to own
a horse to a caregiver, companion and friend to the noblest of beasts.

The Horses of Proud Spirit is not so much a story as it is a first hand report by one woman
recounting her journey from novice horse owner to committed caretaker and horse lover.
Initially just wanting a horse of her own, Ms Bowels buys a horse basically on a whim. She is
totally unprepared to select a horse as she has no experience whatsoever in even the
basic care of a horse. As soon as she gets the horse home, her inexperience becomes
even more apparent as the young, healthy animal she thought she bought is actually old,
sick and basically unable to even be ridden. Once she realizes the desperate condition of
the horse, she is shocked by the miserable level of attention the horse seller provided to
the animals supposedly under his care.

With the purchase of this horse, and the subsequent horses she buys and rescues, Ms
Bowles gets an education in not only the medical aspects of caring for a horse, but more
importantly the physiological aspects of raising horses.  Each chapter of this book is a
stage in her life. It reveals the progression of her education and transformation from a
clueless horse owner to a compassionate, care giver to these magnificent animals.

This is a personal tale of learning respect for, caring of, and even communicating with
horses. This story relates a critical event in one woman’s life that defined for her a new
purpose, to provide a safe haven for as many of these proud spirits as she possibly could.
