Rebecca Scott
Spiegel & Grau
The Ghostwalk by Rebecca Scott is not just a story, it is not just a history lesson, it is not
just a ghost story; it is a complex journey that leaps between the real and the surreal, from
today to yesterday and back again. This is an interesting book in both content and style.
Confusing at times. I was lost at first in the first chapters. I was confused by both the
uncertainly of what was happening in the story and also by the dialog. At times in the dialog
Rebecca Scott seemed to be having a conversation in real time, between two characters,
then, at the same time it was like the character was reliving the dialog, or at least, telling it
to a third party who was not present, or as if she were repeating the story to another as it
was happening.
“No you’re right,” she said. “Forget I said anything. I’ll be back the day after
tomorrow.” She disappeared into the hall.
“Did you mean it? I called out after her.”
I called out to her? At times the dialog jumped from third person to first and I was confused.
Since Ms Scott is an English author the usual references to English country side, history,
and use of words common in England and not so common in America added to the slight
confusion – who knew balaclavas is a ski mask?
Despite my lack of education in English history and less common English speech, I was
drawn into the mystery, the story of Isaac Newton, Alchemy, the Trinity fellowships, and the
possibility that there is such a power within the ego or conscience of man that can enable a
soul to reach from yesterday into today. The base story, one of murder is interesting.
Throw in a history lesson on early Isaac Newton, and it is enlightening. Add the possibility
that events in Newton’s time and today’s event are somehow not only related but occurring
at the hand of the same person, and it is intriguing.
