Okay, so the theme is well-worn; good fights evil, but there when it adds ancient myth and
legend and sets it in the present day, it’s a whole new ballgame. There are many ways to
rate a book; How it enlightens, how it entertains, and what new knowledge it brings are
three of many valid ways. I first look to review a book by how well it grabs me. Does it get
my attention and make me want to read on. When the clock strikes a late hour and your
good sense says you must put it down as morning will be coming all too soon –and you
don't -- then that’s a good read. The Alchemyst is a good read. The dialog flows, the
characters are interesting, and the story unfolds quickly, pulling us into both the story and
fantasy. No, this isn’t LORD JIM, or SOPHIE'S CHOICE, or TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, but it
is a noteworthy story of the secrets of immortality, mythical beings, and of good and evil—
and its a great read.
